We write to share with you the progress being made on the development of a Marist Brothers public apology.

As previously shared the Marist Brothers will be offering a public apology on Saturday, 9 May 2026, with the event to be held at the Hyundai Marine Sports Centre, Auckland.

On The Day

We understand people feel differently about a public apology. We deeply respect the diverse experiences and emotions this brings, and we are committed to holding space for all of them.

The event is intending to be a space that supports people to choose how they engage with the resources made available. There is no expectation or requirement to attend, to share a complaint, or to participate beyond what feels right for you.

Support will be available before, during, and after the event. We will have trained, independent trauma specialist counsellors available throughout the day. Private spaces for support will be available, and attendees are welcome to step out or take breaks at any time.

There will also be information and opportunity to start a complaint process. This information will also be made available online.

Media

The event will be streamed and available online for those who are wanting to watch but do not wish to attend in person or choose to watch from another comfortable place for them to be supported.

The livestream will focus only on speakers and not attendees.

Speakers

We are working alongside survivors and supporters to ensure the event reflects their needs and wishes.

Those who have shared interest to speak we can put you in contact with an independent support person who is experienced in supporting others through their preparation. Their role is to walk alongside you offering practical and emotional support to prepare for this. This support is survivor-led and independent of the Marist Brothers.

Travel Support

We can assist with travel needs for those who wish to attend. Please contact PSO@pacificdps.com for information on available support.

Redress

The Marist Brothers redress continues to be developed and will include a holistic response. It will also support any wider catholic church redress when available. Details and more information about Marist Brother redress will be shared with the apology.

Further Questions

If you have any further questions regarding the Marist Brothers public apology, please share them with Jonathan and Carlene at PSO@pacificdps.com and we will do our best to answer them in our 27 March update.

We will provide more detailed information about the structure of the day, including timing, the format of the apology once these details have been confirmed.
